Warmachine Battle Report: Khador vs. Circle Orboros: Vlad 2 vs. Krueger 2 - Steamroller 2016 Take and Hold

This match pits Vlad 2's superior infantry vs. Krueger 2's superior control. Here are the lists:

Khador - Vlad 2
Waracaster: Vlad 2
Warjack: Ruin
Warjack: Marauder
Unit: Man-O-War Shocktroopers x2
Unit: Kayazy Eliminators
Unit: Greylord Outriders
Solo: Man-O-War Kovnik
Solo: Man-O-War Drakhun
Solo: Saxon Orrik

Circle Orboros - Krueger 2
Waracaster: Krueger 2
Warbeast: Warpwolf Stalker
Warbeast: War Argus
Warbeast: Megalith
Warbeast: Wold Guardian
Warbeast: Gorax
Unit: Druids
Unit Attachment: Druid Overseer
Unit: Shifting Stones
Unit: Shifting Stones
Unit Attachment: Stone Keeper
Solo: Blackclad Wayfarer
Solo: Gallows Groves
Solo: Gallows Groves

Top of Turn 1 - Circle Orboros: Krueger 2 and his forces move up the table and take control of the forest in the center of the board. The Druids lead the charge.

Bottom of Turn 1 - Khador: Vlad 2 gets his buffs out. He first casts Hand of Fate on the Greylord Outriders and then Assail on Ruin. He finishes his turn casting Arcane Might on himself. The Man-O-War Kovnik gives Desperate Pace to the Man-O-War Shocktroopers in the front and Saxon Orrik gives them Reconnaissance. Everyone else runs up to close the gap.

Top of Turn 2 - Circle Orboros: The Druids are pretty effective this round. They use Pulse of the Earth to knock down the front line of the Shocktroopers while the UA protects them from Greylord sprays. The Blackclad Wayfarer is able to spray into the Outriders and kills 2. Megalith and the Wold Guardian use Geomancy and telekinesis 2 of the Shocktroopers back and turn them around. Krueger 2 gets in position behind the flag in hopes he can score a point next turn.

Bottom of Turn 2 - Khador: Vlad 2 upkeeps Assail on Ruin, Arcane Might on himself, and Hand of Fate on the Greylord Outriders. The Greylords can't target the Druids because they are immune to cold so they focus on the Shifting Stones and the Blacklack Wayfarer. They are able to kill the Blackclad Wayfarer but only do minimal damage to the Stones. The Man-O-War Kovnik gives the front Shocktroopers Desperate Pace again and Saxon gives them recon. Both units of Shocktroopers move up and are able to kill a few druids. The Man-O-War Drakhun is able to charge the War Argus and does significant damage. Vlad 2 runs behind the Shocktroopers while Marauder and Ruin line up to take a beating. No one scores.

Turn 3 - Circle Orboros: A Primaled Warpwolf Stalker was able to take out Ruin and put some good hurt on the Marauder taking his Right Arm and Cortex out. The Druids used their Pulse of the Earth and knocked down the Shocktroopers again while the Wold Guardian is able to do some work on the Shocktroopers. Krueger 2 scores his first point at the top of 3.

Turn 3 - Khador: The Greylord Outriders go in and are able to take out some of the Shifting Stones and their UA. The Shocktroopers kill 4 Druids and the Drakhun finishes off the War Argus. Vlad 2 moves behind the Man-O-War wall in hopes that he won't get shot. Khador is able to contest so it is still 1-0 Circle.

Top of Turn 4 - Circle: The Stalker Frenzies and does some damage to the Marauder. The remaining Druids try to knock down the Shocktroopers to give Krueger 2 LOS to Vlad 2 who is camping 0. They are able to get him LOS and the Wold Guardian uses telekinesis to move Krueger 2 up 2". Krueger 2 then aims and begins to shoot Vlad 2 with Sustained Attack Boosted POW 12s. He is able to take Vlad down to 4 life but is now left in the open. Megalith is able to easily dispatch of the Kayazy Eliminators who are also knocked down.

Bottom of Turn 4 - Khador: Vlad pops his Feat and rolls a 1. He then snuggles behind the Man-O-War Kovnik. The Man-O-War Shocktroopers stand up and with the help of the Drakhun, they finish off the Wold Guardian. The Marauder tries to kill the Stalker but misses 4 times needing 7s. The Greylord Outriders are able to finish off the Druids and do 8 damage to Krueger 2 which is transfered to the Gorax. Saxon Orrik just ran to engage both Megalith and Krueger 2.

Top of Turn 5 - Circle: It was fairly simple to get LOS from Krueger 2 to Vlad 2. Megalith just needed to kill Saxon Orrik with a boosted attack and then Geomancy a telekinesis on the Man-O-War Kovnik. Krueger 2 then activated and aimed. He needed 7's to hit and got it.

To do 1 damage Vlad 2 who was at ARM 18 and was camping 3 focus, Krueger 2 would need to roll 12s. He needed to do 4 damage. His first shot cranks it and even though Vlad 2 was fairly same he was able to roll a 15 to kill him.

Win for Circle Orboros with Krueger 2 by Assassination.

All Stars - The Druids are not as bad as everyone says they are in MK3. They do a ton of work with their pushing and knocking down. Krueger 2 is also pretty nasty with his Sustained Attack 12" POW 12 ROF 3 gun. The Greylord Outriders also did a fair amount of damage and would have been a lot more trouble if 2 of them weren't killed by a single Blackclad Wayfarer.

Sorscha 1 vs. Butcher 3 - Steamroller 2016 Khador vs. Khador

I needed a little more practice with my Steamroller 2 list pairing so I decided to pit the sweetest MK3 casters in Khador against each other in an all out bare knuckled brawl to see who would come out on top.

Sorcha 1

Warcaster: Sorcha 1
Warcaster Attachment: Reinholdt
Warjack: Behemoth
Warjack: Destroyer
Battle Engine: War Wagon
Unit: Rifle Corps
Unit Weapon Attachment: Rocketeer x3
Unit: Widowmakers
Solo: Marksman
Solo: Kovnik Joe
Solo: Eiyriss 1

Butcher 3

Warcaster: Butcher 3
Warcaster Attachment: Reinholdt
Warjack: Ruin
Warjack: Kodiak
Warjack: Juggernaut
Unit: Kayazy Assassins
Unit Attachment: Kayazy Underboss
Unit: Nyss Hunters
Unit Attachment: Valachev
Solo: Orin Midwinter

This game went a lot faster than I thought. I got greedy with Butcher 3 and tried to dominate the zone on the bottom of 2 and tank it out but he just can't hang vs. Sorscha's assassination threat.

On the top of 3, Sorscha had LOS to Butcher 3 and popped feat. Behemoth, a Destroyer, and some Winter Guard Rocketeers unleashed a barrage of shots and took him out.

I usually run a Bokur with Butcher 3 but thought the 3 Heavies would be enough to screen vs. most lists. Arching Fire bypassed all the Jacks and was able to seal the deal.

Khador vs. Khador Battler Report - Sorscha 1 vs. Vlad 3

I didn't get a chance to play Warmachine this week because our friend cancelled on us so I decided to set up a game vs. myself: Khador vs. Khador - Sorcha 1 vs. Vlad 3. I've never played Vlad 3 but he looked fun and I wanted to try him out.

Sorscha 1 List (75 Points)

Warcaster: Sorscha
Warcaster Attachment: Goblin Speculator
Warjack: Behemoth
Warjack: Destroyer
Battle Engine: War Wagon
Unit: Man-O-War Bombardiers
Unit: Winter Guard Rifle Corps
Unit Attachment: Rocketeer x3
Solo: Kovnik Joe

vs.

Vlad 3 List (75 Points)

Warcaster: Vlad 3
Warcaster Attachment: Madelyn Corebeau
Warjack: Ruin
Warjack: Juggernaut
Unit: Doomreavers
Unit: Doomreavers
Unit: Greylord Outriders
Solo: Fenris
Solo: Man-O-War Drakhun
Solo: Orin Midwinter

End of Turn 2: Sorscha Feats and takes out many Doomreavers and wipes out the Greylord Outriders with the Rifle Corps. Vlad 3 and his army try and get into position for nex turn. Vlad 3 Scores 1 victory point and leads 1-0.

End of Turn 3: Battle Engine Contests Vlad 3's zone and the Riflemen + Rocketeers are able to finish off Ruin. Vlad 3's Juggernaut is able to contest. Still 1-0 Vlad 3

End of Turn 4: Sorscha's army is able to bring down Fenris and all but 1 Doomreaver which Toughs. They also take out the Dragoon. Vlad 3's Army is able to take out the objective bringing them to 2 points for a 2-0 lead.

End of Turn 5: Sorcha clears almost eveything off the left side  (including that Juggernaut) except for 1 pesky Doomreaver which is contesting. Vlad 3 is able to kill the Battle Engine and with Madelyn Corbeau and Wind Wall, he is very safe from assassination. Orin Midwinter takes out 2 Riflemen. Score is 3-0 Vlad 3.

End of Turn 6: After clearing Orin Midwinter and Corebeau with some good deviations, Sorcha sends all of her Riflemen to the corners of the zone to give Vlad 3 a hard time clearing it for the win. She is also able to clear out her friendly zone on her turn to put the score at 3-1. Vlad 3 is able to kill a bunch of Rifleman and 2 Rocketeers which boosts his ARM for the round. He is unable to clear the zone and contest the other so the score is now 3-2 Vlad 3.

End of Turn 7: Sorcha moves up and starts to collect points. She's now at 4 which makes it almost unwinnable for Vlad 3. Vlad's only chance was to clear the zone or run into the enemy zone and score 2 for the win but it was just too far away.

End of Turn 8: Sorcha moves in for the kill, gets a crit stationary but still fails to finish of Vlad. It doesn't matter since Warcasters can't contest zones. Sorscha goes up 6-3 to win.

Mercenaries vs. Cygnar - Shae vs. Sloan - 75 Points Steamroller

Shae vs. Kara Sloan - Game 2

Our Journeyman league was finally over so now we get the chance to try some new stuff. Everyone seemed to be sick of playing against Khador so I brought my Mercenary army as a change of pace. We didn't end up going to GMI games but instead Ryan came over and we played a couple games at the office.

Austin is on a 3 game winning streak with Sloan which I don't think has ever happened before.

I really want to like Shae and his pirate army, I even read his book. I just don't really like how it plays. The Commodore Cannon is amazing but the dude spam is not as exciting and is fiddly.

The first game we played I totally forgot that Sloan's battlegroup ignored clouds and put up a 4" Veil of Mist to protect Shae. He saw right through it and shot his DEF 17 like it was nothing. Sloan is downright dirty and put Austin on a 4 game winning streak.

The second game I played more cautious and stood behind the Galleon and a forest. Austin tried to set up an assassination but there was too much LOS blockage that he lost 5-0 on scenario. Sloan isn't hard if you play very carefully. One false move and she can kill you easily by herself. She took Karchev down to 2 Boxes when I played her last.

I think Austin and Ryan kind of feel it is cheap to win on Scenario. If Kara Sloan wants to put all her eggs in one basket and go for a long ranged assassination the penalty should be that she loses ground in the scenario. If you lose on scenario it's your own fault.

I like the chess aspect of positioning pieces and winning on attrition or scenario instead of going for all or nothing assassinations. I think out of the 100 games I've played of Warmachine I've lost only about 10 ever and most of them to unlikely dice spiked assassinations. I've only lost on scenario twice ever and those were in tournaments vs, Kreuger 2 and a Butcher 3 mirror match.

Maybe one day I'll get to play outside my meta and see how I do vs. next level competition. I'm a fairly good player but when put up against someone who is next level and plays competitively, I have a really hard time because I get about 1-3 games every 2 weeks.

Hopefully our GMI Games meta will grow and we'll have some new fun factions and people to play against.

Update on Journeyman League for GMI Games

75 Points vs. Mike - Khador vs. Cryx

I went 10 - 1 in the Journeyman League at GMI Games. My final list ended up being:

Warcaster: Karchev (-30)
Warjack: Juggernaut (+12)
Warjack: Juggernaut (+12)
Warjack: Decimator (+16)
Warjack: Marauder (+10)
Unit: Widowmakers (+8)
Unit: Battle Mechaniks (Min +3)
Unit: Kayazy Eliminators (+5)
Unit: Kayazy Assassins (+15)
Unit Attachment: Kayazy Underboss (+4)
Solo: Marksman (+4)
Solo: Kell Bailoch (+5)
Solo: Eiyriss 2 (+6)
Solo: Ogrun Bokur (+5)

Even though I had the best record, Justin won the league because he played more games. I think he went 14-5. I did lose to Justin the very first day on the Mangled Metal scenario. Ret just destroys when there are no zones because Heleynna can just shoot your guy and move him while the Manticore dances around and shoots. I just had to keep running and eventually I split his army but I failed my assassination attempt. It was fun and I enjoyed my games. Here are some pictures from it.

0 Point Mangled Metal vs. Justin - Khador vs. Ret

10 Point Mangled Metal vs. Austin - Khador vs. Cygnar

10 Point Mangled Metal vs. Jose - Khador vs. Minions

50 Point vs. Joey - Khador vs. Trollbloods

65 Points vs. Charles - Khador vs. Retribution

50 Points vs. Henry - Khador vs. Khador

Khador - Journeyman League - Week 2

khador journeyman league week 2
Khador Journeyman League - Week 2

Tomorrow I continue my Journeyman League at GMI Games in Riverside, CA but for week 2 they've bumped up the battlegroup points by 10. Since your'e required to take your original battlebox of Koslov, a Juggernaut, and a Decimator, there aren't many options for Khador to get to 10 points.

The only real choice is a Marauder which offers nothing exciting. The new ability to get an extra die on structures is absolutely useless but for 10 points you get 32 boxes at 20 ARM.

Last week we played straight battleboxes in a Mangled Metal format which has no scenario other than the win condition of destroying all of your opponent's Warjacks/Warbeasts.

I played 3 games. The first game was vs. Cygnar which I was able to easily beat after taking out the Ironclad. The second game was vs. Menoth. My opponent misjudged some distances even though you can premeasure and I was able to get the alpha strike before he could set my caster on fire.

My third and final match of the week was vs. Justin's Retribution. It was a rough game as he was able to shoot and re-position his Jacks back 3" with Rhythm of War. He was also able to move around my Jacks 3" with Force Grip. With no scenario he was just slowly plinking away with boosted POW 12 shots and my speed 4 Jacks could never reach him.

I finally was able to chase him accross the table and got Koslov next to his caster. I just needed to survive a turn but he was able to finish me off with Hand of Destruction and a Manticore.

Hopefully this week doesn't suck because it's another Mangled Metal scenario. I'll only have a chance if there's more terrain. I actually didn't use Decimator's guns every much and didn't realize it had beat back. I might try shooting his Manticore out of range of Helynna and then ramming Jacks down his throat. It might work out.
